Heading "News" in Single Column news

When news is set to Single Column, the heading "News" doesn't show above the first news item, though it does show when news is set to Double Column. Is there a reason for this? And can the heading easily be made to show when the setting is Single Column? (One of my sites runs on 7.00.7, the other on 7.01.5; it's the same in both cases).
