news in a panel?

Hi

I have a site that shows the forum as the home page.
Is there a way to show the news items in a panel below this?

I have looked at new panel - but news is not in the drop down list to choose from?

I have installed the "Double News Panel" from addons but that shows headers only and not the snippet as the standard site works

Any help gratefully received

I guess this is an obvious thing but I'm being slow
