Forums question
The Fish
Hi, I'm COMPLETELY new to all this.

Infact, someone else is building my site for me Pfft

I'm trying hard to find my way around all the admin stuff on my lonesome.

I was doing OK but then I came to a snag.

How do I create sub forums (a forum within a forum) and how do I add more rungs to the ladder of membership?

By that I mean, if I set a forum so that members can see, this means that anyone from members up can view it but not public. Or, if I set a forum to admin, then anyone from admin up can see it but not public or members.

IIRC for forum sub forums you need a mod. I think the default forums won't do sub-forums

People Ask Me, "Why is it free?" and I tell them (really slowly) "Because it doesn't cost anything"

As w2ibc posted above you could use that Infusion,As for :

Simply set user groups

Simply set user groups

I have tried this but I don't see a way to give a group certain allowances.

e.g.

If I add a group called, lets call it "Noobs" and a group called "Elitists", if I then allow the "Noobs" group to view a certain part of the forum, then "Elitists" CAN'T view it.

I'd like it so that "Noobs" can view the "Noobs" section but so can the "Elistists" and yet the "Noobs" can't view the "Elitists" section.

HOPE that makes sense? lol

If I am correct, once you let's say create your new group called noobs. Then when you actually create a new rank, it must be set as Special, then apply to noobs. Thus anyone outside that group can not see it, unless they are set as a mod or admin. The same with your other group applies.

Let's take my site for example. I have created 4 new ranks. These ranks apply specifacally to themselves. If I was to create new forums for each of these groups, I can set it so group 2, 3, 3 and 4 can see group 1. Whereas the higher your group goes, depends on who moderates it. So group 2,3 and 4 can moderate group 1. Whereas group 3 and 4 can moderate 2 and 4 can moderate 3, and admins moderate 4. It all depends on how you set up your groups, and which group is higher and who moderates who. User Groups and Forum Ranks is all you need.
