How can I link to a file or folder on my network?

I am running this on a local server, so I am not really worried about the security.
I make a link to a network folder like this:
<a href="file:///\\computer\Documents\name of file"target='blank'>File Link</a>

Sometimes it works when middle clicking for a new window, but preview and save trash out the link and it will not keep working. (Extra slashes, no slashes, trying to add the "website" address to the start,etc) Depending on my attempt to correct addslash, stripslash, str_replace,etc.

What do i need to change? I suspect I need to alter
administration-articles.php, but I have had no luck keeping the link consistent. It even changes the link on the server itself part of the time when I make changes.

I changed my title in hopes someone would answer me as I have been waiting several days in hopes of getting an answer. I guess you answered the question in the title, but did not really address the question I was trying to ask.

I have searched for several keywords looking for the answer. I think I am out of luck.
