News.php Link Question

Hello, have a strange idea that would make sense with Fusion's core. I'm wondering if there isn't a way to make it so that when a user clicks on the news_cat image in the news.php page, that the link goes to a page exactly like news.php but with only stories from that category. Rendering would be like news.php, NOT like news_cats.php

Essentially, this is the line of code that would be changed:
if ($data['news_cat_image']) {
            $news_cat_image = "<a href='news_cats.php?cat_id=".$data['news_cat_id']."'><img src='".IMAGES_NC.$data['news_cat_image']."' alt='".$data['news_cat_name']."' align='left' style='border:0px; margin-top:3px; margin-right:5px'></a>";
         } else {
            $news_cat_image = "";
